The US Consumer Agency has recalled over 2,300 Shermag cribs nationwide and 800 in Canada because the drop-side hardware poses a suffocation risk to infants and toddlers. If the drop-side hardware stops working it will cause the crib side to become detached which would leave a gap in which an infant could become entrapped. Entrapment could potentially lead to suffocation or strangulation. The drop-side, if broken, can also create enough space that would allow a child to fall out of the crib. A fall from the crib, based on it's setting could cause serious injury to a small child. The Shermag cribs that are being recalled were sold either solo or as part as furniture collections at Land of Nod and other specialty stores. The collections are “City Lights”, “Fairy Tales”, and “Dormez Vous” and the model numbers (which are listed on stickers, warning labels and the mattress springs) are 202647, 211047 and 272547. If you have one of the recalled cribs it is advised that you stop using them as soon as possible. Contact Shermag right away and they will send you a free repair kit. In the meantime, if you are a parent, you should make safe, temporary sleeping arrangements for your children.
Earlier this year the U.S Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) banned the sale, resale and manufacture of all cribs featuring the drop-side design. The ban went into effect in June after being voted into effect in December of 2010. And though the Shermag recall was not the product of any reported deaths many other manufacturers of drop-side cribs are responsible for at least 32 infant and toddler deaths. A devastating number of children's lives lost due to a simple hardware malfunction.
