The early morning commute took a deadly turn when a semi driving Eastbound lost control and veered into oncoming traffic striking a minivan carrying 4 and a Swift transportation truck and at least one other passenger vehicle. The minivan exploded into flames on impact killing 3 of the 4 passengers. The Swift transportation truck's driver, which was thrown onto its side, has been listed as being in extremely critical condition. The driver of the semi, which crossed the dirt median, was killed in the course of the collision, as well. No names have been released at this time.
Though the I-10 is now open as of an hour ago it may still be slow going. The Arizona Department of Public Safety's Bart Graves told reporters “We're routing people off the westbound I-10 onto State Route 87, which is the Picacho off-ramp and they can take that down into Coolidge and then go over to Casa Grande and pick up I-10 there,” He also suggested Route 79 alternatively.
This morning's tragedy reminds us just how dangerous the roads can be. Auto accidents take the lives of over 40,000 people every year, leaving millions injured.
